Erode (Tamil: ஈரோடு Īrōṭu [i ː ː ɖɯ ɾo ] ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the capital of the district of the same name. The city lies at the Kaveri, about 90 kilometers north-east of Coimbatore and 340 kilometers southwest of Chennai. Their population is around 157,000 in the city proper. In the agglomeration Erode approximately 522,000 people ( 2011 census ).

Until the 18th century Erode was an insignificant settlement that grew up only with the conquest of Mysore under Hyder Ali and the establishment of a fort to the city. In the wars of Mysore against the Marathas and the British East India Company, the city was largely destroyed, but rebuilt after the final capture by the British in 1799 as a garrison town. The Scottish geographer Francis Buchanan reported in November 1800 by a fort with 4,000 crew members and an associated comprehensive settlement of 300 houses with 1500 inhabitants. 1807 the garrison was moved. The abandoned fort still existed until 1877 and was then torn.

Today, the city is characterized by the cotton industry and related industries such as dyeing and textile printing. In addition, the food industry ( vegetable oils, rice, drinks), leather production and processing, and the small industrial metal processing comes to a certain importance.

Known born in Erode personalities are the mathematician S. Ramanujan (1887-1920) and the social reformer Periyar EV Ramasami alias ( 1879-1973 ).
