Common Heron (Erodium cicutarium )

The heron beaks ( Erodium ) are a genus of the family of Geranium Family ( Geraniaceae ). The approximately 60 to 75 species of the genus are found worldwide. They appear mainly in the temperate zones in Europe, Africa and Australia.

Description

There are one-, two-year or perennial herbaceous plants. The parts of the plant are hairy. The mostly arranged in basal rosettes and opposite or alternate, stalked leaves are simple or compound, often finely pinnate. Stipules are present.

The flowers are individually rare, usually for two to ninth in terminal or axillary inflorescences doldigen. The stalked, often small, five-fold, radial symmetry to slightly zygomorphic, hermaphrodite flowers. They are similar to those of the genus Geranium (Geranium ). The five sepals are free. The five free petals have nailed colors from pink to purple to blue to. A discus is available. There are two circles, each with five stamens present, only five of them are fertile; the staminodes are between the fertile stamens. Five carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. In each of the five subjects ovary there is only one ovule. The style ends in five scars.

The carpels are storchschnabel shaped like all Geraniaceae and shatter into five single-seeded fruit part. The "fruit beak" rolls up spirally.

Use

Few Erodium species and especially their varieties are used in gardens and parks as a groundcover for rock gardens or brick columns.
