Geography

Geographical Location

Erwitte is located about 8 km south of Lippstadt, 15 km east of Soest, about 60 km from Dortmund and 30 km west from Paderborn. The highest point is located in the south-eastern part 183.8 m above sea level. NN and the lowest north-west of the district Böckum to 75.5 m above sea level. NN.

History

St. Lawrence Erwitte and the Church of St. Peter Geseke were the only Urpfarreien between Soest and Paderborn. Through the delivery of Corvey the existence of the place is occupied in the 9th century. The place was at an intersection of the light path with the Lipperweg. In the local royal court several kings and emperors were guests. In particular, Henry I was staying there, 935, where it has issued various certificates. King Henry II, Bishop of Paderborn My work gave some goods around. Conrad II gave to the diocese of Paderborn in 1027 the Curia regis in Erwitte. To the royal court includes a chapel. This was the oldest church building in the area. The parishioners, however, had the rights to the archbishops of Cologne under -standing church of St. Lawrence. This was placed under the Patroklistift in Soest under Archbishop Sigewin of Are.

The place and the surroundings were in the Middle Ages seat of several important noble families. Among them were the lords of Erwitte. While there was already a market in 1027. But Erwitte has not developed in the Middle Ages to a city in the legal sense.

The archbishops of Cologne are attested for the first time in 1256 as the owner of the local Montgoger Report Creation. Erwitte was therefore often disputed between Cologne and Paderborn. In the 17th century that the noble Landsberg Erwitte to unite both the Electorate of Cologne Droste Office Erwitte as well as the Erbamtsmannschaft of Königshofsbezirk Erwitte - Wester -cotta in one hand. They built the castle Erwitte. The Droste family house built Erwitte Erwitte.

In the time of the witch hunts in 1630 witches Commissioner Henry magistrate directed the witch trials in Erwitte.

Only after the cement industry began an economic boom in the 1920s, Erwitte 1936 was raised to town.

During the period of National Socialism in the Erwitter castle a stronghold of the kingdom of training DAF and the NSDAP was housed. From 1959 to 1970, Erwitte location of the air defense missile battalion 21 ( Fla Rak Btl 21 ) and the second battery of the battalion. Housed were the units in the castle Erwitte, the castle of the town. In 1970 the company moved to Echtrop at Soest.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1975, pursuant to § 46 of the Münster / Hamm- law, the former city Erwitte and the communities of Bad Westernkotten, Berenbrock, Böckum, Ebbinghausen, Eikeloh, horn Millinghausen, Merklinghaus Hausen- Wiggeringhausen, North Village, Schallern, Schmerlecke, Seringhausen, Stirpe, Völlinghausen and Weckinghausen together to form a new community. The municipality is named Erwitte and shall be known as " City". The Office Erwitte is dissolved. Legal successor is the newly formed city Erwitte.

Coat of Arms, Flag and Seal

The city has been awarded with Erwitte certificate of the provincial government in Arnsberg of 21 December 1977, the right to bear a coat of arms (§ 3 paragraph 1 of the main articles of association ), which is almost identical to the coat of arms of the former Office Erwitte.

Coat of Arms Description

" Split from gold and red. Front erect a red, gold crowned lion, behind a slanted left golden hausmarke similar sign in the form of a fitted with a transom Wolf Angel. "

Importance

The colors are those of the monastery of Corvey ( first documented mention Erwittes ), the lion is from the arms of the Knights of Erwitte, the hausmarke similar character is interpreted as Salzer hook, and is attached to the bell tower of the St. John 's Church in Bad Westernkotten
