Eschweilera

Eschweilera is a genus woody vascular plants of the family pot fruit tree crops ( Lecythidaceae ). There are about 90 species are known, all of which grow as trees in tropical South and Central America. Several species are used as timber, many are at risk.

Description

In the genus Eschweilera there are trees of different sizes, which grow according to different levels of the forest: in the understory, the canopy or emergent. The change-constant leaves are not clustered at the ends of the branches, there are sheet sizes between five and 60 centimeters in the genus before. The leaves are simple, entire and smooth, the Blattaderung is reticulate.

The inflorescences arise either directly on the trunk and thicker branches, or are axillary or terminal on the branches. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic. There are six sepals and six petals present. The numerous stamens are organized in a ring, which everts on one side to a hood. This hood is curled over the stamens of the ring, she wears infertile staminodes. Pollinating insects must crawl under this hood, the staminodes and transferred eat while the pollen.

The roundish capsule when ripe fruits remain hanging on the tree, open there and release the seeds. The seeds are not winged, the interior of the fruit is not filled with pulp.

Dissemination

Eschweilera is distributed from Mexico in the north to eastern Brazil, making it the genus within the pot fruit tree plants with the widest dissemination. Are populated mostly low altitudes up to 1000 meters above sea level, dry or flooded areas to be avoided.

System

We distinguish about 90 species in the genus, as many are estimated to still undescribed. The genus can be divided into two clades after molecular genetic studies, which are not, however, be sister.
