Eshera

Eschera ( Abkhaz Ешыра; Эшера Russian ) is a town in Abkhazia, with about 2140 inhabitants.

It is located in Rajon Sukhum on the Black Sea, about 16 kilometers from the center of the capital Sukhum. Eschera is a well known spa town, in the place already had about the Russian painter Vasily Vereshchagin his summer residence.

At the time the Soviet Union was an important Eschera Olympic Training Center. Since 1993, the area is part of the de facto independent Abkhazia, however, Abkhazia is still claimed by Georgia as the whole. Eschera is the birthplace of Vladislav Ardzinba, the first President of Abkhazia.

When Abkhazian census from the year 2011 a population of 2141 people was determined. Of these, 40.9 % Abkhazians, Armenians 40.8% and 10.9% Russians. Smaller minorities were Georgians (1.9%), Ukrainians (1.2%) and Greece ( 0.6%).
