Sukhumi District

The Rajon Sukhumi ( Abkhazian Аҟəа араион / Aqwa araion; Russian Сухумский район / Suchumski rayon; Georgian სოხუმის რაიონი / Sochumis Raioni; Armenian Սուխումի մունիցիպալիտետ ) is a raion ( district ) in the disputed region of Abkhazia.

The administration of the Rajons is located in the city of Sukhumi, but is itself not part Rajon and forms a separate administrative unit. The 60 villages of Rajons were summarized in the Soviet period to 11 village Soviets: Achalscheni, Achalsopeli, Besleti ( center Abschaqwa ) Eschera, Gumista ( center Atschadara ) Kelassuri, Odischi, Pschu, Schroma, Semo Eschera and Tawissupleba.

In Sukhumi Rajon 11,747 people, of which 61.4 % Armenians, Abkhazians 24.8%, 7.3% Russians, 2.1% and 1.6% Georgians Greeks live ( census 2003). With an area of 1523 square kilometers, the population density is thus 7.7 inhabitants / km ². In the Soviet census of 1989, before the outbreak of Abchasienkonfliktes, Rajon still 39,765 inhabitants ( 26.1 per km ²), of which 44.4 % Georgians and Abkhazians had 5.1%.
