Essex (Ontario)

Essex is the county seat of Essex County in southeastern Ontario in Canada with approximately 19,600 (2011 ) inhabitants.

Location

Essex is located about 25 km southeast of Detroit. It is around 20 km from the Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie to the north and the south.

Community

As a station of the Talbot Trails Essex grew in the last half of the 19th century significantly and reached the city status in 1890. Essex was on 1 April 1999 by the merger of the municipalities of Essex, Harrow, Colchester ( Colchester North and South Colchester ) created. The total municipality comprises the towns

Events

Improper storage of nitroglycerin at the station of Essex (Michigan Central Station) a devastating explosion, the shock waves were felt even in some parts of Michigan occurred on August 10, 1907. At 9.50 clock exploded a car with 5000 pounds of nitroglycerin. The ruins of the station flew far up to 600 meters. There were two deaths, numerous injuries, and property damage of about $ 250 000.
