The Estadio Nacional Universidad Complutense, also known as Campo Central de la Ciudad Universitaria, or simply El Central, is a rugby stadium in the Spanish capital Madrid. Located on the main campus of the Complutense University of Madrid venue was inaugurated on 12 October 1943. The stadium is used for Spanish rugby union team and the clubs CD Arquitectura and CR Cisneros as homestead.

History

The plans for the construction of the Ciudad Universitaria (Spanish for " university city " ), and thus also of the rugby stadium, began on 17 May 1927, when the then King Alfonso XIII. by decree awarded the construction contract. However, the originally expected for 1936 completion of the complex I was delayed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The campus itself was under construction in November 1936 an important site of the Battle of Madrid, the front line ran during the peak time of the siege of the city by the troops of Francisco Franco's right across the campus. Many of the nearly completed buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged thereby. The opening ceremony of the sports facilities and the rugby stadium took place only on 12 October 1943 at the Spanish National Day. The architects of the venue were Luis Lacasa Navarro, Javier Barroso Sánchez- Guerra, as well as the well-known civil engineer Eduardo Torroja y Miret.

In addition to various university sports clubs the Spanish national team, the stadium began in 1954 to use as a home. Since then, numerous renowned selections in the Estadio Nacional were guests to meet the team of the Iberians. On 20 November 1982, the Spaniard played for example, against the New Zealand Māori, in November 1989, the second Australian team was a guest, with players such as John Eales, Jason Little, David Nucifora or David Knox, who should win shortly after the World Cup. In January 1992, France played XV, France's second team with the rugby legend Philippe Sella, in the Estadio Nacional. On 24 October 1992, the selection of Argentina met in a friendly match on Spain, the match ended with an unexpectedly tight 34:43 in favor of the South Americans. During the qualification process for the 1995 World Cup, the Spanish were playing against the freshly baked Five Nations winners Wales. On 1 November 2001 the Spaniards had the honor to meet in a friendly match on the Wallabies, which is the highest ever defeat the hosts 10:92.

Location and Public Transportation

The stadium is located in the Ciudad Universitaria, a campus in the district of Moncloa - Aravaca in the west of the city, on which various institutions of the University Complutense of Madrid, the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the National Distance University are located. The Estadio Nacional is part of the sports complex Complejo Deportivo Zona Sur on Avenida Juan de Herrera, surrounded by the streets of Calle del Obispo Trejo and Calle de Martín Fierro. The stadium can be reached via Metro Lines 6 (Station Ciudad Universitaria ) and 3 ( Moncloa station ) and the bus lines 46, 82, 83, 132, 133, 160, 161, 162 and N20.
