Estadio Sergio León Chávez

CD Irapuato

Football World Cup 1986

The Estadio Sergio León Chávez is a football stadium in Irapuato, Guanajuato. It is located in the district Chinacos, the financial and business center of the city. The stadium is used for CD Irapuato as a home ground and was a venue for the World Cup 1986.

History

The stadium was opened on 23 March 1969 as Estadio Irapuato. Its present name it was given in recognition of the service that had won 's then President of the CD Irapuato in the construction of the stadium on January 4, 1990.

Play -off matches in the Mexican soccer championship have not been held in the stadium because the CD Irapuato never been able to qualify for the final battle for the championship. Only once, in the winter of 2000, the Freseros could qualify as the worst group runner-up for the so-called Repechaje where it to playing against the best third, Monarcas Morelia a place in the Liguilla called play-offs. Although Irapuato won their home match 1-0, but lost at the Estadio Morelos then with 2:7. A small consolation for those hefty swatter is likely to have consisted only of that Morelia was able to secure the championship title in the subsequent play-offs.

1986 World Cup

In return Irapuato had kept 15 years previously against Morelia the upper hand. Morelia was in fact chosen to be one of the 12 venues of the FIFA World Cup 1986. Because you but not in time could prove a WM -compatible Stadium, originally supplied Morelia thought WM location on the city Irapuato was transferred.

In Estadio Irapuato, as it was still called at the time, were three preliminary round Group C matches played (the other three games, all with the participation of France, took place at the Estadio Nou Camp of León, the footballing great rival of Irapuato ):

  • 2:06. USSR - Hungary 6:0 ( 16,600 spectators )
  • 6:06. Hungary - Canada 2:0 ( 13,800 spectators )
  • 9:06. USSR - Canada 2:0 ( 14,200 spectators )

The above-mentioned Audience figures indicate that the WM- interest in Irapuato was not particularly pronounced. The greatest scenery was still in the opening game. For the present 16,600 spectators coming was worth: they not only saw six goals, but the biggest win this World Cup at all.

The greatest triumph

As already mentioned, it has never been in the local stadium, a play-off match for the Mexican soccer championship. And so is likely to have been the greatest event of the stadium on 21 June 2003. After the CD Irapuato namely the Primera División Apertura had 'A' won in 2002 and his arch rival Club León the Clausura 2003, just these two deeply hostile clubs faced each other in the final ascent. With the 2:1 in the Freseros León de Irapuato had already provides the best starting point and refilled three days later with a 1-0 victory in front of his home crowd and made the ascent perfect. The fact that the return to the Primera División calculated by two victories achieved against arch-rivals, increased the triumph immeasurably.
