Eternal sin

The sin against the Holy Spirit is a sin according to Christian understanding, in rejecting the Holy Spirit and are attributed to evil.

The term appears in the New Testament only in the context of a single incident. Jesus said to some Pharisees and scribes:

Some other passages speak of sins for which there is no forgiveness (Hebrews 6.4 to 8; 10.26 to 29; cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 ); they do not use it the term " sin against the Holy Spirit."

Biblical context

The term sin against the Holy Spirit falls in the face of blatant accusations that some Pharisees and scribes Jesus raised against (Matthew, Chapter 12, verses 22-32, in parallel in Mark 3 and Luke 11 ). It was claimed that Jesus exaggerating the evil spirits through Beelzebub the chief of the evil spirits, instead of by the Holy Spirit. Then he warned them that the people " will not forgive the blasphemy against the Spirit " (Mt 12:31-32 and Mk 3:29). In the Gospel according to Luke, this statement is not known, however, follows the saying: " Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters " (Luke 11:23 NIV ).

Roman Catholic understanding

The Roman Catholic Church has expanded the topic beyond the purely biblical significance beyond. According to Roman Catholic understanding the impossibility of forgiveness only applies when a person remains in sin against the Holy Spirit until his death. The Catholic Church distinguishes six sins against the Holy Spirit:

  • Presumptuous hope of salvation without merit ( praesumptio )
  • Despair of salvation ( desperatio )
  • Rejection of the perceived truth ( Veritatis impugnatio agnitae )
  • Envy on the gift of another ( fraternae invidentia gratiae )
  • Obstinacy in sin ( obstinatio )
  • Impenitence until death ( impoenitentia )

These sins are not to be confused with the seven deadly sins.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992 ) does not mention any individual sins, but more generally: "Those who deliberately refuses to accept the mercy of God through repentance, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardening can lead to final impenitence to death and to eternal perdition. " (No. 1864)

Protestant understanding

Protestant boom emphasize power everything forgiving grace as she brings Jesus in the context of the sin against the Holy Spirit to express: " All sins and blasphemies will be forgiven ... " (Mark 3:28 NIV ). Forgiveness, however, presupposes that it is wanted by the people or at least not consciously discarded. " Grace that is thrown at us, like the plaster on the wall, would be no mercy. " ( Pohl ) sin against the Holy Spirit commits So just who ascribes the obvious work of God to the devil. It's not about religious doubts or murmuring against an absent or alleged unjust God.

The Roman Catholic definition of the measured assurance of salvation ( praesumptio ) as a sin against the Spirit is to be understood as a theological contradiction to the Reformation doctrine of salvation, where faith alone ( sola fide ) is a prerequisite for salvation.
