Francesco Spiera

Francesco Spiera (* 1502 in Cittadella in Padova, † December 27, 1548 ) was a Protestant jurist from Italy.

1542 became a Protestant, he was asked in 1548 before a Court of Inquisition in Venice. The trial began on 24 May and ended with Spiera on July 20 in St. Mark solemnly abjured his " mistakes ". After this oath, which he repeated in the cathedral of Cittadella on the following Sunday after Mass, he fell into a deep depression that eventually in the same year cost him his life. His end was critical to the passage of Pier Paolo Vergerio to Protestantism.

Spieras fate is of interest because it was used by the Protestants of the 16th century as a warning of the consequences of the so-called sin against the Holy Spirit.
