Ethiopian general election, 2010

The parliamentary elections in Ethiopia in 2010 were held on 23 May of the year. To select all the seats of the People's House of Representatives and the individual parliaments were the autonomous regions.

According to the National Electoral Commission of Ethiopia, the party gained Revolutionary Democratic Front Ethiopian Peoples ( EPRDF ) of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi over 90 percent of the standing of electoral seats in the People's House of Representatives. This result, however, was questioned by opposition parties such as the Coalition Forum for Democratic Dialogue ( FDD), overall they described the election as fraudulent and demanded its repetition.

Course

According to the European Commission's election observer mission proceeded election day and vorhegende campaigns generally peaceful. The secrecy of the ballot was taken, the turnout was high, and the media coverage was neutral. They criticized the blurring of the boundaries of the ruling party and local administration, the inconsistent application of election processes, the lack of representation of women in political parties and the use of government resources for activities of the ruling party.

The opposition, however, complained of intimidation of their candidates and supporters, arrests of political opponents and the targeted denial of ballots.

Results

The preliminary result was 499 seats for the EPRDF, 35 seats for allied to the EPRDF parties and 2 seats for the FDD.

The National Electoral Commission has confirmed this result 21 June 2010 largely: before the opposition had 2 seats, after she had only one seat

The official results according won the ruling parties and their allied regional government parties together a total of 545 of 547 seats in parliament, while the opposition and independent parties each won a seat. The candidate of the main opposition alliance Medrek (FDD ) had indeed received it about 30 % of the vote, because of the electoral system, however, almost all the seats went to the ruling coalition.
