Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is only 13 to 15 millimeters. Thus, they are among the smallest owl butterflies. The forewings are whitish in the root field and are sharply delimited by the inner edge of incipient red-brown band. This is followed by a bright field with brownish shade joins. The Saumfeld dusted brownish and shows a distinct dark spot at the apex. Pin, ring and kidney blemishes are not visible. Area, the butterflies have a slightly darker color. The hind wings are whitish root box and go to Saumfeld in a light brown tint over. The outer edge is formed of fine white hairs.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is tiny and sand colors. The young caterpillar is gray and has a short hair, later it is greenish, has indistinct white back - and side- back lines and black points and faintly discernible from the food plant from. The head is very small and black. The brown-yellow doll has a compact shape.

Geographical distribution and habitat

In Europe, the northern distribution limit of southern England and northern Germany Südostbelgien over central and eastern Denmark, southern Scandinavia to Estonia and St. Petersburg runs. In the south includes the occurrence northern Spain, Corsica, Northern Italy, the Adriatic coast of Croatia, Albania and Lebanon. The presence of the species is linked to the presence of the food plant, which is why they in the circumscribed area of the abovementioned regions only very locally - but partially numerous - occurs. Main habitats are sandy heaths, inland dunes, dry pine forest edges and warm Ödländereien.

Way of life

The moths are diurnal and nocturnal and fly in July and August. Visit on the day sometimes the flowers of sand immortelle ( Helichrysum arenarium ) or fly short distances in the sunshine. At night, they appear to artificial light sources, occasionally also on baits. Characteristic is the always head downward rest position of the moths to flowers or stems. The caterpillars live from May to June on the sand immortelle and feed preferably of their flowers, shoot tips and fruit stands. They like to hide in a whitish cocoon below the flower head.

Endangering

The occurrence of Sandstrohblumeneulchens in Germany is everywhere at high risk because of the strong connection to the food plant, where it is in decline. On the red list of endangered species it is classified in Category 2 ( high risk ).
