Eugène Lanti

Eugène Lanti (actually: Eugène Adam, born July 19, 1879 in Néhou / Manche, † January 17, 1947 in Mexico) was a French esperantist and co-founder of the leftist Esperanto Association Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda ( SAT). The French pseudonym " Lanti " in German means " the resisters end ".

Life

Lantis parents were farmers. He worked as a farmer, carpenter, carpenter and furniture designer. He learned 1914/15 Esperanto at the front, where he was reassigned as a medic. After his military service, he devoted himself to the world language movement. He was initially undecided between Esperanto and Ido its early competitors. At that time Lanti became known in Paris with Lucien Bannier and Louis Glodeau. With the two together, he founded the association Liberiga Stelo, the precursor of SAT. In 1921 were initiated by Lantis the founding of SAT and he was appointed committee chairman.

From 1925 lived Lanti in Paris, where he maintained contact with the leading French anarchists. In 1934 he married George Orwell's Aunt Ellen Kate Limouzin. From Lanti Orwell learns the possible ideological side of Esperanto know. This idea and some features of Esperanto can be found in the Newspeak of the novel 1984.

Lanti planned to create a dictionary of Esperanto modeled after the Petit Larousse. So it was in 1930 the publication of the monolingual Plena Vortaro, the predecessor of the Plena Ilustrita Vortaro.

In 1933 Lanti resigned from his post as chairman of the SAT Committee, the who had held since its founding, as he could no longer endure the criticism of his person and his quest and saw the unity of the movement in danger. Also, he was irritated by the increasing repression against Esperanto during the Stalinist purges. Nevertheless, he continued to work for the goals of SAT, particularly through his literary work. He wrote mainly essays and translations ( for example, Voltaire's Candide ). His style was known as a model of simplicity and clarity. So he was protagonist of Sennaciismo ( movement of the nation lots).

In retirement, he left France in 1936 final and went on a world tour. He was to be found in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile, eventually reaching Mexico. Suffering from an incurable disease, he committed suicide in 1947.

Target World Heritage

As an example, the penetration of the SAT ideas by means of the neutral Esperanto serve the following train of thought Lantis:

" We must firstly be us fully aware of the need to use Esperanto often. So we come, at least in spirit, out of the narrow framework of our nation with the goal of a world culture. We are committed to continually learn our language, to enjoy their mind and to awaken with new expressive possibilities to life. - To use Esperanto without committing violations of the grammar is purely decorative. What counts is the Heimischmachen the Zamenhofschen masterpiece of a rational means of expression in the brain and in the way of thinking. Especially every member of SAT has been eager to strive to ensure that our movement can give everyone the ability to use Esperanto material. - The current recruitment strategy resembles the barrel of the Danaids from mythology. You campaigned and always campaigned again, but the recruits spent only a short time in an Esperanto movement without land. - My hope is based on the fact that ultimately lead all serious people the facts to light. You will understand that our request only on firm ground when the buyer of Esperanto textbooks not after some time Esperanto again turn their backs: but members at SAT are to draw from the learned benefits! - Let us make it clear to all interested parties that they carry around with them national heritage that we must throw it away by as often as possible using the nation -less language with like-minded people from all over the world. Esperanto may be an appropriate means of education in our hands, which makes us worthy Earthlings. - This way it will be a truly living language that creates a world culture and nation -less attitude. It will help in removing the borders and make the deadly Pestgeruch of patriotism put an end. "
