Eunjangdo

The Do Jang also Eunjangdo is a knife from Korea.

Description

The Do Jang is mainly worn by Korean women. The Do Jang has a single-edged, pointed blade and is richly decorated because it is presented as a wedding gift from the bride's parents to the bride the night before the wedding. It is for self-defense and also serve as jewelry, therefore the most magnificent workmanship. In the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897), this tradition was born: it is seen as a symbol of the transition of the child into adulthood, because the women after the wedding was no longer dependent on parents. The Do Jang is as a discrete reference to marital status, loyalty, personal honor as well as a visual alert for possible attackers represents the women wore it in a fabric that was worn as a necklace; or in the belt where the knife was tied with a silk tassel usually at the end of the handle attached to a very complicated process.

The Do Jang is one of the greatest achievements of Korean metal and Silberberarbeitung. It is often decorated with inlays or with an enamel technique (French Cloisonne ) and studded with coral and gemstones. But are also used many other materials such as bone, wood, ivory and gold. The knives seem like a piece of jewelry or a toy, but they are fully functional and are made from high quality, hardened steel blades.
