Euphorbia leuconeura - habitus

Euphorbia leuconeura is a flowering plant in the genus Euphorbia (Euphorbia ) from the family of the spurge family ( Euphorbiaceae ). She is a houseplant and rarely under the name "Madagascar Jewel " ( engl. Madagascar Jewel) commercially available. This species is endemic to the northern coastal rainforests of Madagascar.

Description

In Euphorbia leuconeura is an erect, usually unbranched, stem succulents shrub that reaches heights of growth to 180 cm when the taproot can grow down far enough. The dark green, four - to five -edged trunk has a diameter of 2 to 5 cm and is equipped with leaf scars. At the base it is slimmer. The bristly, coherent, brown red edges consist of the stipule thorns. These are up to 5 mm long and close the cyathia (sham flowers of spurge ) a. Branching to the plant tends only after 4-5 weeks of dry phase, or if it is greater than about 50 cm.

The milky sap contains diterpene esters and triterpene saponins, especially Ingenole and phorbol ester.

The terminal leaves are lanceolate and about 15 cm long and to 6.5 cm wide. The petiole is 4 cm long. The leaf blade is at the top dark green, becoming lighter towards the base. The leaf stalks are white. Stipules are present and cartilage- like (without chlorophyll and Vein ).

Two cyathia sit in the axes of the terminal leaves. They are up to 4 mm long and up to 1.5 mm wide and are a greenish white color. The form is cylindrical. The stamens protrude far from the cyathium. The ovary is inferior.

The capsule fruit lignified in fruit ripening and then rips explosive on ( Ballochorie ). The spherical seed with a rough surface is thereby thrown several meters, so this part of the Euphorbia Austrocknungsstreuern. The seed coat is dark brown, the endosperm whitish.

Propagation

The fertilization occurs through self- pollination ( autogamy ). The seeds are dispersed by a rotary mechanism ( Ballochorie ). The multiplication is done almost exclusively on generative seed, although broken branches in moist substrate very slowly develop roots and become a stand-alone plant.

Dissemination

Euphorbia leuconeura is endemic in the north of Madagascar. By 2007, this species was only discovered in less than five locations in the province of Antsiranana. Fortunately, this is a location in Marojejy National Park. Some of the locations were very wet, others dry, but they are all located in the coastal rain forest.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN) lists the species on its Red List as " endangered" ( vulnerable ).

Breeding and use

Varieties of this species are undemanding and easy to cultivate indoor plants. Plant provide shade to semi-shade, direct sunlight and temperatures below 10 ° C to avoid. Loses in the winter ( because of the increasing darkness ) most of the leaves in spring and drives new. The milky sap is poisonous. As Topfplanze drawn to benötig this plant planters with 24 to 30 cm in height to grow to normal height of 1.8 m. Seeds the plant forms from about 25cm height.
