Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 12 to 20 millimeters. The basic color of all wings is predominantly gray-brown to lead- gray. All wings are provided with a plurality of alternating light and dark transverse lines. These are less well-developed on the hind wings. Diskalflecke are not recognizable. The abdomen is gray to gray- brown.

Egg

The oval egg is characterized by regular hexagonal recesses on the shell sculpture.

Caterpillar

Adults caterpillars are short and thick, dirty yellow in color and show reddish side stripes as well as colored dorsal and secondary ridgelines.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The cow-wheat - Pug occurs in almost all of Europe. The eastern spread even as far as Siberia to the Urals, Central Asia and the Altai Sayan Mountains and the Amur region and in. In the Alps, it is still found in 2000 meters, in the Pyrenees in 2400 meters above mean sea level. In Ukraine, in Asia Minor, the Caucasus and Georgia is the ssp. E. lutosaria home. Way of life

The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal. They fly from May to August. Mostly male moths appear to artificial light sources. The caterpillars live in the majority from July to September and feed on the flowers of some cow-wheat ( Melampyrum ) and rattle species ( Rhinanthus ). The pupae overwinter in a cocoon between clods, sometimes twice.

Endangering

In Germany, the cow-wheat - Pug comes in all federal states in varying frequency and is run on the Red List of Threatened Species as not at risk.
