The Decorated pigeon's crop - Pug ( Eupithecia venosata ), also known as Decorated campion - Pug is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of the tensioner ( Geometridae ).

Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 20-25 millimeters. The wings have a pale brown to off-white color and are drawn very characteristic. The front wings are large-scale and rounder than in many other flowers tensioners. Typical of the type of bright, black -bordered, some grid-like acting wavy lines and black colored veins. The hind wings have a similar but greatly attenuated pattern. The Decorated pigeon's crop - Pug is very similar to the type Eupithecia schiefereri and must be distinguished from this unique only by means of a genital examination. Since E. schiefereri not found in Germany, where the determination is simple. However, in Austria, Switzerland and in other southern countries both species occur in parallel.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is penetrated and oval. The caterpillar is usually colored green dirty and has a very broad brown back stripe and a shiny black head. The doll is shiny yellow brown with dark brown cremaster, which at the base five beaded surveys and an elongated tip with several bristles.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. It prefers warm, dry areas and is found along forest edges, meadows, parklands and warm slopes. In the Alps it rises to about 2,000 meters in height.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed on the capsules of the pigeon's crop - Leimkrauts ( Silene vulgaris ) and other Silene ( Silene ). They live in July and August. The pupae overwinter and are sometimes more than once. The moths fly from late May to late July.

Endangering

In Germany, the species occurs in all provinces, the incidence, however, varies considerably, so that it is on the Red List of Threatened Species in Category V ( near threatened ).
