The beautiful elm trees ( Euptelea ) are the only genus in the family of the beautiful Elm Family ( Eupteleaceae ). There are only two ways.

Description

There are deciduous shrubs or small trees. The bark of the branches is smooth. The stalked, simple leaves are cut sharp at the edge. Stipules are not available.

The inconspicuous flowers are produced in spring before the leaves to sixth to twelfth in inflorescences. The flowers are hermaphroditic and reduced ( wind- pollinated ). There are no bloom yet. In each flower, there are six to 19 stamens and eight to 31 free, upper permanent carpels. The fruit is stalked.

Use

The Vielmännige Schönulme ( Euptelea polyandra ), has many stamens ( hence the name ). This tree reaches 6-8 m Height. He has fresh green leaves, sometimes tinged pink at the blade tip; they turn bright yellow and red in autumn. A particularly good effect as ornamental tree has this type as accent.

The leaves are eaten in China with oil and salt.

There are only two species in the genus beautiful elm trees ( Euptelea ):

  • Franchets Schönulme ( Euptelea pleiosperma Hook.f. & Thomson, Syn: Euptelea davidiana Baillon, E. delavayi Tieghem, E. franchetii Tieghem, E. minor Ching. ): Occurrence: Himalayas: Bhutan, northeastern India ( Assam ); southeastern Tibet ( = Chinese province of Xizang ), middle China: southern Anhui, southern Gansu, Guizhou, southwestern Hebei, western Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi eastern, southern Shaanxi, southern Shanxi, Sichuan, northern and eastern Yunnan, northwestern Zhejiang. The sites are located in forests of valleys at altitudes 900-3600 m.
  • Vielmännige Schönulme ( Siebold & Zucc Euptelea polyandra. ): History: Japan ( Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu ).

Ecology

Euptelea polyandra serves the larvae of some Lepidoptera species of butterflies as food, including the prongs cohesive beef tensioner ( Ectropis crepuscularia ).
