Evelyn Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire

Evelyn Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire GCVO CBE DJStJ (* August 27, 1870, † April 2, 1960 at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire ) was a British nobleman and 38 years chatelaine ( Mistress of the Robes ) at Queen Mary.

Life

Lady Evelyn Emily Mary FitzMaurice was the eldest daughter of four children of the politician Henry Petty - FitzMaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne and his wife Lady Maud Evelyn Hamilton ( 1850-1932 ), a daughter of Scottish aristocrat James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn. Early on, accompanied Evie, as she was known within the family, along with her siblings her parents abroad, either to visit relatives or by the military obligations of her father.

On July 30, 1892 Lady Evelyn FitzMaurice married at St. George's Church ( Hanover Square ) in the City of Westminster ( London) Victor Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, the eldest son of Lt.- Col. Lord Edward Cavendish and Lady Emma Elizabeth Lascelles. Her husband was one of the largest private landowners in the United Kingdom and Ireland. From the marriage, which by all accounts was happy, had seven children were born:
