Everett Barksdale

Everett Barksdale ( born April 28, 1910 in Detroit, † January 29, 1986 in Inglewood, California ) was an American jazz guitarist of swing.

Life and work

Everett Barksdale first learned alto saxophone, guitar and bass. He moved to Chicago and began his career in the early 1930s with Erskine Tate. After that he played with Eddie South, and later with Benny Carter. In the 1940s Barksdale settled in New York and shared his professional activities in the game with smaller jazz combos in clubs and working as a studio musician; he was employed from 1942 to 1944 for the radio station CBS. Until the 1950s, he collaborated with producer Joe Davis and worked on recordings of vocal groups like The Blenders and The Clovers with. He was also a sideman for Maxine Sullivan and Dean Barlow. Like his colleague Milton Hinton, with whom he often worked, Barksdale was now often requested as a valued rhythm guitarist for studio sessions in a variety of musical genres, from doo-wop, rhythm and blues, early rock ' n ' roll to pop music. So he gave the Blue Slick for the hit Love Is Strange by Mickey & Sylvia.

Here he contributed to recordings by Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr. and Sarah Vaughan. Occasionally he also participated in jazz recording sessions, as with Buddy Tate 1958/59. In the 1970s, he was still working as a studio musician in California before the end of the 70s, sat down to rest.

Barksdale also worked on recordings by Henry Red Allen, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Sidney Bechet, Benny Carter, Chris Connor, Al Hirt, Johnny Hodges, Billie Holiday, Rex Stewart, Edmond Hall and Jimmy Rushing.
