Augenfleckbärbling ( Brevibora dorsiocellata )

The Augenfleckbärbling ( Brevibora dorsiocellata ) is a small freshwater fish that is found on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. Two subspecies have been described, the nominate as d dorsiocellata and B. d macrophthalma Meinken 1951, called on the German light eye Rasbora.

Features

The Augenfleckbärbling has reached an elongated, laterally flattened body of a maximum length of 6.5 cm, the subspecies B. d macrophthalma is only 3.5 cm long. The body is yellowish - silvery to pale oliver color and shimmers grass green or bluish to purple. The back is gray brown or Olive Drab, the belly silvery, the fins yellowish. The dorsal fin shows a characteristic black spot, which is highlighted in white. Along the sides of the body extend two dark, more or less distinct longitudinal bands. The lateral line is completely or almost completely.

  • Fins formula: Dorsal 2/7, Anal 3/5, pectoral 1/12, Anterior 2/8.
  • Dandruff formula: SL 20-27.

At the subspecies B.D. macrophthalma the head, the eye is larger, is shorter and the number of scales less than the nominate in the central longitudinal row. The lower half of the eye iridescent greenish gray. The longitudinal bands are barely visible.

Way of life

Augenfleckbärblinge live as a school of fish in flowing and standing waters. Keep close to the surface or in mid- water zones. They feed on insects that have fallen onto the water surface, zooplankton, crustaceans and worms.

System

The species was assigned by Duncker in the first description of the collective genus Rasbora. In the year 2009 a Liao, Kullander & fishing for the species in the genus Brevibora. According to Tang et al. (2010 ) is on the way, however deep within Rasbora sensu lato.
