Eznik of Kolb

Eznik of piston (Armenian Եզնիկ Կողբացի, Esnik Koghbazi ) (* in Koghb, today in the province of Iğdır, Turkey) was an Armenian church father of the 5th century bishop or high priest ( Vardapet ) of Bagrewand.

Eznik was born in the former region Tayk in northern Armenia. He was a pupil of Isaac the Great and Mesrop. At the request of his teacher, he went to Edessa, and later to Constantinople Opel to improve his knowledge in various scientific fields and to Greek and Syrian manuscripts of the Bible and writings of the Church Fathers to collect or copy. He returned to the Council of Ephesus in 431 back to Armenia back and is probably identical with the historical figure Eznik, Bishop of Bagrevand.

He is counted to the circle of the holy Bible translators and is considered one of the classics of ancient Armenian literature. His main work Elc Alandoc ( "Against Sects ") was first published in 1762 in Smyrna. An improved translation comes from the Mechitarists in Venice from 1826 and 1865. Indifferent A French translation is by Levaillant de Florival, " Refutation of différentes sectes " (Paris, 1853). A good German translation is by JM Schmid, " Eznik of Kolb, Against the heresies " (Leipzig, 1900). It is an essential source for the Zurvanismus, a contemporary direction of the Persian religion and mythology.
