Făgăraș

Fagaras ( Fogarasch German, Hungarian Fogaras ) is a town in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania. Through the city flows the Olt (Alt ).

History

The city is dominated by a castle. A legend tells that took off from this place the Prince Negru Voda to south to found the Southern Carpathians, the Principality of Wallachia. At the end of the 12th century the castle was only a wooden fortress, which was then expanded in the 14th century to a stone fortress.

In the Kingdom of Hungary, the city was the administrative center for the county Fogaras and in the Kingdom of Romania for the district of Fagaras.

Over the river Aluta led a 270 m long covered bridge. 1613 built Gábor Bethlen a fortified castle. In the city there were five churches in 1881; then lived there drive 5307 inhabitants, trade, commerce and tobacco. The city was the seat of a district court and had a Protestant school.

In Fagaras July 12, 1849 Józef Bem was defeated by the Russians.

In the 20th century the city during the communist regime was considered anti-communist stronghold. In the 1950s, the castle was a prison where many enemies of communism were interned. The castle was restored during the communist dictatorship and now houses a museum and a library.

Fagaras 2007 had about 39,000 inhabitants. Of these, about 306 Saxons, as an ecclesiastical establishment of 2009 can be seen.

The Doamna - Stanca -Gymnasium has a German division in which all subjects are taught in German. The students are mostly Romanians, rare Transylvanian Saxons.
