Fanad

Geographical location

Fanad ( Irish: Fánaid ) is a peninsula in the north of Ireland in County Donegal. It lies between Lough Swilly and Mulroy Bay. Your northernmost point is that of a lighthouse decorated Fanad Head. Only Malin Head on the Inishowen Peninsula is even further north. In the south of the site Rathmelton forms the entrance to the peninsula.

The highest elevation on the Fanad Knockalla mountain with 363 meters. To the south of the seaside resort of Port Salon is located Stocker beach, one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. The Fanad Drive is a beautiful round trip on the narrow streets of the peninsula. It starts in Rathmelton and leads on the east coast via Port Salon to Fanad Head. Back it goes to the West Coast via Carrowkeel ( Kerrykeel ) to Milford. The Lighthouse at Fanad Head is world famous because it is subject of many postcards and calendars. 1812 shattered the frigate Saldana at Fanad Point (now Fanad Head ). At the urging of Captain Hill of the Royal Navy in Derry the construction of a lighthouse was decided in 1814. On March 17, 1817, the lighthouse went into operation. Congal Mac Fergus Fanad was 700-710 Irish High King. The roots of the Scottish kings were at Fanad. Famous Irish family clans like the O'Donnell, the O'Tunneys or the Scottish clans of MacSweneys and Clinton come from here. 1607, the " Flight of the Earls " took place from Rathmullan from: Aodh Mór Ó Néill and Rory O'Donnell fled along with 90 relatives and associates from the English on the continent. The British took advantage of this in order to confiscate their goods. In the 18th century Rathmullan was a base for the English sailors America, later it became an important trading center for salt herring, shopped the Russian traders here. In the Mulroy Bay is one of the largest salmon farms in Ireland. Also in Lough Swilly, you can see some salmon cages.
