Fay Weldon

Fay Weldon CBE ( born September 22, 1931 in Alvechurch, Worcestershire, born Franklin Birkinshaw ) is a British author and feminist.

Youth and Education

Weldon comes from a literary family. Her grandfather was the writer Edgar Jepson ( 1863-1938 ). Her mother wrote novels under the pseudonym Pearl Bellairs, a character from a short story by Aldous Huxley. Weldon grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, until her parents divorced and her mother returned with Fay and her sister in England.

She studied psychology and economics in St. Andrews, Scotland. After she was pregnant out of wedlock, she broke off her studies and moved to the birth of her first son to London.

Career

Weldon married shortly after moving to London for the first time, her husband was not the biological father of her son. After the marriage failed after two years, she worked as a copywriter in an advertising agency in order to earn a living for herself and her son. In 1962, she married for the second time by her husband, she took the name Weldon. The marriage produced three sons come. During the second pregnancy Weldon began to write lyrics for radio and television broadcasts.

Her first novel, The Fat Woman 's Joke was published in 1967. Their contemporary novels act mostly by a female main character who has to prevail against resistance of patriarchal Western, mostly British, society. From their more than 20 novels, several were filmed, including She-Devil with Roseanne Barr.

Weldon also writes short stories, TV scripts, and magazine and newspaper articles. In 1996, she was on the jury of the Berlinale. Her autobiography about their early years with the car title de Fay appeared in 2002.

Family

Weldon's first marriage ended in divorce, her second ended by the death of her husband in 1994. She is the mother of four sons, three of them from her second marriage. She has been married since 1995 to his third marriage with the poet Nick Fox and lives in Hampstead, London.
