Faye-Ellen Silverman

Faye- Ellen Silverman ( born October 2, 1947 in New York City ) is an American composer, music teacher and pianist.

Life

Silverman attended from the age of four at the Dalcroze School of Music. Thirteen- year old, she was winner of the Parents League Competition with the juror Leopold Stokowski. She continued her education at Barnard College, Harvard University and Columbia University. Her teachers included Otto Luening, William Sydeman, Leon Kirchner, Lukas Foss, Vladimir Ussachevski and Jack Beeson. She also was a piano student of Irma Wolpe and Russell Sherman. She taught, inter alia, at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, the City University of New York and Columbia University and since 1991 at the Mannes College of Music.

With their compositions Silverman represented the U.S. at the International Rostrum of Composers UNESCO, won the Indiana State Composition Contest, the Music Prize of the National League of American Pen Women's, several awards of ASCAP and a prize from the American Music Center. They also received scholarships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts ( 2007), the Rockefeller Foundation (1987 ) and the Composers' Conference ( 1985). Commissions they received, inter alia, by Philip A. De Simone, Linda J. Warren, Larry Madison, Thomas Matta, the International Women 's Brass Conference, the Monarch Brass Quintet, the Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates, the Con Spirito Woodwind Quintet, the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra, the Fromm Music Foundation, the Chamber Music Society of Baltimore and several wind ensemble under the National Endowment for the Arts Consortium Commissioning Program. They also composed pieces for the flutist Nina Assimakopoulos, Sergio Puccini and the Danish Corona Guitar Quartet.

As a pianist Silverman performed at the International Festival of Experimental Music in Bourges, in the Library of Congress and as a soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and played recordings of Radio Cologne. She is a founding member of the International Women 's Brass Conference and Composers' Union Music Under Construction.
