Fear of a Black Planet is the third album by the rap group Public Enemy. It was published on 20 March 1990. The Rolling Stone led Fear of a Black Planet 2003 to place 296 of its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Genesis

Fear of a Black Planet was in the midst of controversy surrounding the anti-Semitic remarks made by Professor Griff. Since the reviews of the album were positive ( even better than It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back) fell silent and the anti-Semitism allegations at the latest from the sacking of Professor Griff, the verbal attacks had little consequences. The album is now considered a milestone of the hip-hop genre.

Music style

Public Enemy refined on this album, their musical style. The album contains both fast- rapped songs ( " War at 33 1/3 ") and slower pieces ( " Polly- wannacraka "). In particular, stood out the production team The Bomb Squad with various innovative productions and Chuck D's songwriting at the reviews. Besides Rapliedern the album contains four tracks that consist only of samples.

About a year after the album's release was followed by the Grand Upright Music, Ltd.. v. Warner Brothers Records, Inc. of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, with which the sampling was severely limited especially in Hip- Hop artists. Consequently, the following Public Enemy albums contained only a few samples.

Background

In the music video Fight the Power Spike Lee directed. Spike Lee used the song in his film Do the Right Thing.

Text content

The album contains some of the most Public Enemy songs, including " 911 Is a Joke " and "Fight the Power". " 911 Is a Joke " is about to be late coming ambulance car and the futility of the emergency number 911 "Fight the Power" is one of the classics of hip- hop. It is a call for an uprising against the "powers that be ".

Guest musicians

The only guests on the album are Big Daddy Kane and Ice Cube, who participated in the song Burn Hollywood Burn.
