Federico Barbaro

Federico Barbaro SDB ( born February 18, 1913 in Cimpello, Fiume Veneto, † February 29, 1996 in Pordenone) is an Italian Salesian of Don Bosco, a missionary in Japan, teacher, translator and essayist.

After his first profession in 1931 and the philosophical studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he went in 1935 as a missionary to Japan. After he had completed his theological studies there, he was ordained a priest in 1941 in Tokyo. He then worked as a teacher of philosophy and theology at the Salesian institutes of Misaki and Tokyo as well as various private and national Japanese college. From 1950 to 1956 he headed the Salesian Don Bosco Printing Sha in Tokyo. He gave the magazine Katorikku Seikatsu ( Catholic life ) out.

His bibliography includes over 120 publications and 2000 articles. His name is particularly associated with a complete version of the Holy Scriptures in the modern Japanese language.
