The Fehntjer Deep is a river in East Friesland. Smaller rivers are known there as deep, so as well as the knock Tief.

The Fehntjer deep leads of the municipality in the district of Aurich Grossefehn in a westerly direction up to Emden, where it flows via a lock to the port. About the Fehntjer deep large parts of the interior of East Friesland are dehydrated; of great importance is also the nautical tourism, as the depth for the most part can be also used by motorized boats. The depth Fehntjer uses sections with the former river Flumm and was significantly broadened in the course of Fehnkolonisierung.

The Fehntjer depth has no " source " in the traditional sense. It is fed by two branches, the Northern and the Southern Fehntjer low. These two arms flow together exactly at the point where communities Grossefehn and Ihlow and Moormerland abut. There are many oxbow lakes that are heavily overgrown.

The northern arm is fed by several Fehnkanälen in the center of the community Grossefehn. The southern arm is the outlet of the Timmeler sea, which in turn is fed by a small number of channels in the community Moormerland and the southern area of the municipality Grossefehn.

To the west of the confluence of Northern and Southern Fehntjer depth the nature reserve Flumm / Fehntjer depth is traversed, which extends north and south of the river. This pasture land is only used extensively. As a result, the Fehntjer deep passes under the A31 and takes away from the north and south more smaller channels and drainage ditches. About the Oldersumer deep and Petkumer Sieltief it is connected to the EMS side channel as well as the places Oldersum and Petkum directly on the river Ems, as are the inland lakes Sandwater in Ihlow and Bansmeer and Uphuser sea in Emden.

At the Kesselschleuse in Emden, in the amount of the neighborhoods small Faldern and Herrentor, ending the Fehntjer low. The boiler lock connects the low of the Ems - Jade Canal, the Emden moat that wraps around the inner city around, and a spur of Falderndelftes and thus the Emden harbor. From there, there is a connection to the EMS through locks and thus the North Sea.

From Emden to Timmeler a sea on boats is possible. About the Northern Fehntjer depth and the canals in the center Großefehns a drive up to Wiesmoor is possible - but due to low, rigid bridges only with canoes and kayaks or small boats up to a certain building height. From Wiesmoor a ride up to Oldenburg and thus Weser is possible via the Nordgeorgsfehnkanal and more channels and rivers.
