Fehren

Fehren is a municipality in the district of Thierstein in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Fehren is located on 587 m above sea level. M., 6.5 km east-southeast of the town of Laufen (air line). The village stretches a scenic location on a hill at the northern foot of Mette Berg, on a sloping against the Laufen basin -facing hillside, in the Black Country boys.

The area of ​​1.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the northern Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the west to the intra- Jurassic basins of inclined running slope of Fehren. To the east of the municipality of soil through the intermediary of a mountain ( 632 m above sea level. M. ) to the Ibach, which forms the eastern boundary and has created a gorge-like valley between the mediator and the mountain ranges Eichlenberg. In the south, the municipality ban extends to the slopes of Mount Mette, where 660 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Fehren is achieved. The southwestern boundary runs along the village stream of Breitenbach. To Fehren include some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Fehren are Zullwil, Meltingen, Büsserach and Breitenbach.

Population

With 631 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Fehren one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 96.5 % are German, 1.8 % French-speaking and 0.8 % speak Turkish ( as of 2000). The population of Fehren amounted in 1850 to 123 residents in 1900 to 122 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased continuously. Especially since 1990 (457 inhabitants) increased growth rates are recorded.

Economy

Fehren was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. In the 19th century there were in Fehren a silk mill. Even today, the dairy and livestock and the growing of fruit ( mostly cherry trees ) have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available, including operations of the mechanical and electrical industry. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in running and Breitenbach and in the Basel area.

Traffic

The community is conveniently comparatively quite well developed. It lies on the road from running via Breitenbach after Nunningen. By Postbus course, which serves the route from Laufen to Nunningen, Fehren is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village took place only in 1371 under the name of the court in Ferren. Later, the spellings Ferrer ( 1458 ) published, Feren ( 1500) and Fehren ( 1623). The place name is derived from the Old High German word fer (remote), in which the term refers watched the situation Fehrens of Breitenbach or Büsserach ago.

Since the Middle Ages Fehren was under the rule Gilgen mountain. In 1522 it came to Solothurn and was assigned as a result of the Bailiwick Thierstein. It was not until 1789 Fehren an independent municipality, before it was a district of Breitenbach. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district of Dornach during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the district of Thierstein.
