Sky Ried is a municipality in the district of Thierstein in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Sky Ried is located on 662 m above sea level. M., 15 km south of the city of Basel (air line). The village stretches a scenic location on a terrace on the southern slope of Homberg, above the valley of Chastelbachs, on the eastern edge of the Laufen basin, the Jura folds of the black boys country.

The area of ​​6.0 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the northern Jura. The eastern part of the municipality takes the Homberg one with the open north Ausräumungskessel Bärtel and the upstream terraces of heaven Ried ( in the south) and own or studs ( in the north). Population

With 925 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Himmelried one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 94.9 % are German, 1.2 % French-speaking and 1.0 % speak English (as of 2000). The population of Himmelried amounted in 1850 to 434 inhabitants, 1900 to 458 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated constantly in the region from 420 to 480 people. Since 1970 (449 inhabitants), a rapid increase in population was associated with a doubling of the population recorded in 30 years.

Economy

Himmelried was until the second half of the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Even today, the dairy and livestock and the growing of fruit ( mostly cherry trees ) have an important place in the economic structure of the population. History

The municipal area different tracks from the Palaeolithic and some stray finds have been found from the Roman period. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1288 under the name Home Riet. Later, the names Home Ried ( 1295) and Hymelried published ( 1466 ). The transition from the root word home to heaven thus took place until the 15th century. The place name probably goes to the Old High German personal name Haimo and the word reod / Riod ( clearing) back. He thus has the original meaning of clearing of the Haimo. Since the Middle Ages sky Ried was under the Counts of Pfeffingen - Thierstein. They sold the village in 1517 to the Bishop of Basel. In 1527 the Bishop Himmelried ceded to Solothurn, and the resort of the Bailiwick Thierstein has been assigned. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) Himmelried belonged during the Helvetic Republic to Dornach district and from 1803 to the district of Thierstein.

Attractions

The construction of the present, to Saint Francis Xavier church consecrated was approved by the canton of Solothurn Small Council beginning in 1807.
