Nunningen is a municipality in the district of Thierstein in the canton of Solothurn in the northwest of Switzerland.

Geography

Nunningen is located on 621 m above sea level. M., 10 km east-southeast of the town of Laufen (air line). The village extends in a longitudinal recess of the northern Solothurn Jura Mountains, in the headwaters of the Birs Chastelbachs effluent, in the Black Country boys. It is the center of Gilgenbergerstrasse country.

The area of ​​10.3 km ² large municipality area includes a section of the northern Jura strong in relief with a large variety of landscapes. The central part forms the expanding community in west-east direction longitudinal recess of Nunningen, which has a width of approximately one kilometer in the area of the village. In the south of this trough is flanked ( 935 m above sea level. M. ) and the rugged Portiflue ( 876 m above sea level. M. ) from the crest of the mountain Ried. To Nunningen include the hamlets of Engi (603 m above sea level. M. ) in a basin of Chastelbaches northwest of the village, Roderis ( 575 m above sea level. M. ) on a saddle between the valleys of Ibach and Chastelbach and various individual courtyards. Neighboring communities of Nunningen are Beinwil (SO), Meltingen, Zullwil, Breitenbach, sky Ried and Seewen in the canton of Solothurn and Bretzwil and Lauwil in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Population

With 1851 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Nunningen belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 95.0 % are German, 1.6 % and 0.5 % speak Serbo-Croatian albanischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Nunningen amounted in 1850 to 1175 inhabitants, 1900 to 1046 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased continuously. Especially since 1980 (1472 inhabitants) an increased population growth was recorded.

Economy

Nunningen was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Even today, the dairy and livestock and the growing of fruit ( mostly cherry trees ) and agriculture have a certain role in the occupational structure of the population. Many other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available.

Nunningen is a rural community with a variety of commercial and industrial enterprises. On the eastern edge of the old village and in front of the gorge against Engi developed commercial and industrial zones. Today in Nunningen among builders, the metal industry, plastic and wood processing, the electrical industry and mechanical workshops are represented. Nunningen was always the most important place in the country and takes Gilgenbergerstrasse for the surrounding area fulfills its central place functions. Nunningen also houses the nursing home Stäglen the communities Zullwil and Nunningen. In the same building is located for several years the village museum.

On the south slope of the Buechenbergs as well as on the western edge of the village extensive residential areas have emerged in recent decades. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in the region running -Breitenbach and in the Basel area.

Traffic

The municipality is located on a link road from Laufen to Reigoldswil. Through the valley of Chastelbachs the direct road leads to Grellingen and on to Basel. Through three postal routes Nunningen is connected to the public transport network. You on the lines of Nunningen after running, via sky Ried to Grellingen and via Seewen to Grellingen.

History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in 1152 under the present name; of 1194 the name Nunnengen is preserved. The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Nunno and thus means for the people of Nunno.

Since the Middle Ages Nunningen was part of the rule Gilgen mountain under the Barons of Ramstein. This rule was in 1527 sold the castle Mr. Hans Imer for guilder 5900 to the city of Solothurn, which transformed the area into a bailiwick. After that prevailed until the French Revolution in Canton Solothurn bailiffs at the castle Gilgen mountain. However, the high court concluded only in 1685 in Solothurn. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) Nunningen belonged during the Helvetic Republic to Dornach district and from 1803 to the district of Thierstein.

Attractions

The parish church of the region is located in the hamlet of Oberkirch on the saddle between Nunningen and Zullwil and stands on Zullwiler ground. On the Nunningerberg is the Chapel of St Wendelin, which was built in the 17th century.

Coat of arms

Split of black and white with two crossed bars lilies in reversed colors. The coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of the Bailiwick Gilgen mountain ( Mount Lily ) that the builders of the castle, the Barons of Ramstein, back (cf. also with the coat of arms of Bretzwil, Brislach, Zullwil and clamps ).
