Felician Myrbach

Felician Myrbach ( until 1919 Freiherr von Rhein field; born February 19, 1853 in Zaleszczyki; † 14 January 1940 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and book illustrator.

Life

Myrbach attended from 1868 to 1871 the Military Academy, then was a draftsman at the Military Geographical Institute and drawing teacher at the Vienna Military Academy. He also studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

From 1881 to 1897 Myrbach lived in Paris as a book illustrator, where he illustrated Alphonse Daudet and among others Victor Hugo's works. From 1897 he taught as Professor of Illustration at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. From 1899 to 1905 he served as its director. Although itself tends towards realism and military subjects, Myrbach opened the " Institute of Viennese Modernism " and won as a teacher Josef Hoffmann, Alfred Roller, Kolo Moser, Rudolf von Larisch, Czeschka and Franz Cizek. 1903 Myrbach was president of the Vienna Secession, 1905, he stepped out with the Klimt group and had to retire because of discrepancies. Thereafter he lived until 1914, again in Paris, during the First World War in Spain. In 1936 he returned to Austria.
