Fennville AVA

The Fennville AVA is a wine -growing region in the U.S. state of Michigan. The modern viticulture began in this area around the mid- 1960s, the recognition as American Viticultural Area (AVA ) was made in 1981.

Location

The recognized vineyards of the area of ​​Fennville AVA spread across the administrative area Allegan County. The area is an enclave within the parent Lake Michigan Shore AVA and is bordered on the west by Lake Michigan, on the north by the Kalamazoo River and on the south by the Black River. The sandy soils of the region are the result of past glacial activity.

The proximity to Lake Michigan has a moderating the climate of the region, so that the Cabernet Franc thrives also known from the Bordeaux grape. During the relatively short growing period of max. 160 days, the thermometer can temporarily climb in summer to 30 ° C.
