Ferdinand Schmitz

Ferdinand Schmitz ( born October 14, 1919 in Cologne ) is a former German wrestler.

Career

Ferdinand Schmitz, also known as " Bubi ", grew up in Cologne and came by his older half- brother Henry Nettesheim for rings. He made unusually rapid progress and has already won at age 18 in 1938, his first league titles before the Olympic bronze medalists from 1936 John Herbert. At the European Championships in 1938 and 1939, he won medals before the war and the post-war interrupted his international career for 12 years. Ferdinand Schmitz was around 1939 certainly the largest German Ringer talent. How talented he was, he showed in 1941 when he won the Olympic gold medalist Kustaa Pihlajamäki suggested in an international match against Finland. In 1951 he was able to start at an international championship again. It was found, however, that the 12 - year break for the German wrestler was too long. The international struggle had evolved. The connection was difficult to restore.

Ferdinand Schmitz was Reichsbahn or Federal Railways employee and stood with Henry Nettesheim and Georg Pulheim years in the highly successful team of ESV Olympic Cologne.
