Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer

Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer (* 1912 in Figueres, † December 27, 1967 in Barcelona) was a Spanish mathematician. In his honor, the Ferran Sunyer -i - Balaguer - Prize is awarded.

Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer had, so he sat his life from birth to a severe physical disability in a wheelchair. He did not go to school because the doctors were of the opinion that he was not up to the load. Instead, he was taught by his mother. His interest in mathematics was promoted through books that brought his cousin from the University Library.

In 1938 he sent two works to Jacques Hadamard, in the Comptes Rendus made ​​for the publication of this work and also brought him into contact with Szolem Mandelbrojt. Later Sunyer i Balaguer was connected to many other well-known mathematicians, Waclaw Sierpinski, or about AJ Macintyre. In total he wrote more than 40 mathematical research papers. Since he could not write themselves on the basis of his disability, he dictated this to his mother, after her death in 1955, then two cousins ​​.

Sunyer i Balaguer main area of ​​work was the theory of functions. In particular, here are a number of results about Taylor series and Dirichlet series with gaps of him. But he also provided contributions to other areas. He received a number of prizes and awards for his work.
