Fetești

Feteşti is a town in the district Ialomiţa in the Wallachian Plain, Romania.

Geographical location

The city is located in the southern part of the Feteşti Bărăgan - the so-called Bărăganul Ialomitei - on the left bank of the Borcea Bratul, a tributary of the Danube. Located in the southeast of the circle Ialomiţa, the city is served by Romania's A2 motorway between Bucharest and Constanta and is thus situated 61 km away from the district capital Slobozia.

History

The place used to be a Romanian Nationals village was first mentioned in 1528 by Prince Radu de la Afumati as a market town. In 1868 he was appointed to the city to the municipality, and ( according to different data) in 1934 or 1965. In 1995 the status of municipium Feteşti ( Municipiu ).

The name of the place is derived - a story told by - of " Satul cu fete" ( " the village with the girls " ) on the ground: " The Shepherd of the Bărăgans came to this place, to find their future wife ."

Population

In the year 2002 33.294 or 34 594 inhabitants were registered in the city ( according to different data); about 3 % more people counted in the field of municipium - on 1 January 2009 - according to the 2002 census.

Traffic

Besides the Romanian motorway A2 to Feteşti located on the National Road (Drum National) DN 3B, a road connecting the city of Calarasi ( Kr Calarasi ) - southwest of Feteşti - with the European Route 60 (51 miles) north of Feteşti located. The city is also railway junction of the railway lines Bucureşti - Constanţa, Mangalia and Buzău - Feteşti.

Attractions

  • The Anghel Saligny - Bridge - also known as King Carol I Bridge - was built by the architect Anghel Saligny for the railway line from Feteşti after Cernavoda on the Danube and its Borcea arm. At the 4087.95 -meter-long truss bridge was built five years, until it was officially opened on 26 November 1890 by King Charles I..
  • The Balta Ialomitei is a marshy island in the lower reaches of the Danube between this and the Borcea arm.
