Urziceni

Urziceni is a town in the district Ialomiţa in Romania.

Location

Urziceni is the Wallachian Plain on the river Ialomiţa midst of Bărăgan - steppe. The district capital Slobozia located about 65 km to the east, the country's capital, Bucharest, 55 km south-west.

History

Urziceni was first documented in 1596. In the framework of increasing regional trade activities she received in 1831 the status of a market, a rural community in 1864 and 1895 to a city. In the 20th century, industry developed, so that Urziceni in the sparsely populated region in the south east of Romania was an economic center. The main activities are the production of ceramic, ferrite, alcohol, soy oil, plastics, textiles and furniture. 1995 Urziceni was appointed municipium.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 17,094 residents were registered in the city, among which were 16,562 Romanians, 493 Roma and Hungary 11.

Traffic

Urziceni is an important railway junction; from here lead lines to Bucharest, Ploiesti, faurei and Ţăndărei. There are good bus links to the surrounding towns. By Urziceni run the European Routes 60 and 85, which share on the western outskirts.

Sports

The Romanian football champions in 2009 was home to Unirea Urziceni Urziceni. For the second half of 2011, the club was relocated to Chiajna in the neighboring county of Ilfov and finally abolished in the same year.

Urziceni has to have no significant tourist attractions.
