Fiano (grape)

Fiano is a very old indigenous white grape variety of southern Italy. It is particularly common in the Italian region of Campania. Fiano was already cultivated by the Romans, who called it because of its great attraction to bees (Latin apis, Italian ape ) even Vitis apiana. In the early 1990s took a Fiano vines cultivated on 251 acres.

It provides aromatic, spicy white wine with a spicy honey and nut bouquet that are stored for long periods. From the grape Fiano Sannio DOC wines and Cilento and the DOCG Fiano di Avellino are produced.

In particular, the winery makes Mastroberardino outstanding services for the preservation of this species. In Sicily, the winery Planeta produced with the Cometa a wine made ​​from 100% Fiano.

Synonyms are Apiana, Apiano, Faiano, Fiana, Fiano di Avellino, Fiore Mendillo, Foiano, Latina Bianca, Latino, Latino Bianco and Santa Sofia.

Minutolo Fiano Fiano Aromatico and Fianello, also known under the synonyms Minutola and Greco Aromatico are not identical with the Fiano. It is a highly aromatic variety which is cultivated mainly in Apulia.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The young leaves are slightly woolly haired and pale green color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three-to five-lobed and medium deep sinuate. The petiole is lyrenförmig open. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are cut deeply as compared with other types. The leaf surface (also called leaf blade ) is easily blistered structured.
  • The pyramidalförmige grape is small to medium in size and dichtbeerig. The oval berries are small to medium in size and of a golden yellow color.

The grew strong varietal ripens about 30 days after Chasselas and is thus regarded as late maturing.
