Fiat CR.1

The Fiat Cr.1 was an Italian biplane fighter aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s. Nine machines were exported. She was the first of a series of Celestino Rosatelli developed biplane fighter aircraft.

History

The fast and agile Cr.1 was able to win the tender for a new Italian fighter against the Savoia - Marchetti S.52 biplane and went from 1924 in the Regia Aeronautica, founded only a year earlier in service. The aircraft with a sesquiplane - interpretation, which, unusually, the upper wing had the shorter wingspan, was in the testing phase improved, free of small control problems and adapted to the requirements exactly. After the implementation of these measures Fiat received the first series order for 109 machines. A further 40 were (later IMAM - Meridionali ) and 100 manufactured by OFM at Savoia Marchetti - in license. After use at not less than eight Italian fighter squadrons were equipped some Cr.1 early thirties to improve the performance with a more powerful engine of Fraschini Isotta. The only export order for nine Cr.1 granted the Latvian Navy.

Other versions were the different motorized CR.2 Fiat, Fiat CR.10 and Fiat CR.5, but not all went beyond the test phase.

The follow-up project as fighter aircraft of the Italian Air Force was the Fiat CR.20.
