Figure-eight knot

The Endacht or eight knot is a sailor knot and is used for increasing the diameter of the rope at the end of the rope. Endacht it is, because it is attached at the end of a rope. He belongs to the stop knot.

Name and history

The name of eight knot comes from its shape that looks like an eight (8). It is sometimes also called a simple figure eight knot, rarely eight knot, but this is usually used for a node with double rope. Other nodes with similar form have similar and partly overlapping names; see below for an overview.

Application

The Endacht serves as a thickening one end of the rope to prevent this, for example from passing through an eye, a block or a rope or halyard stoppers. When sailing always a Endacht is tied at the end of sheets and halyards. If one is under load sheet ausrauscht unchecked, this represents a significant risk for the crew and the ship is difficult to control because of the beating sail. Fully rushed traps are to be set at sea hardly repair, as the line runs upward in most ships inside the mast.

The Endacht can be even after heavy loads easily solve again. The Endacht part of the test substance at the boat slips.

Alternatives

  • As a permanent thickening at the end of the rope is suitable the Rückspleiß.
  • As a permanent thickening is also suitable to the overhand knot or Double overhand knot
