Finley Quaye

Finley Quaye ( born March 25 1974 in Leith, Edinburgh) is a British musician. In 1997, he won the MOBO Award in the category of "Best Reggae" and the 1998 Brit Award for Best British male solo artist.

Life

Quaye is the son of jazz musician Cab Kaye and his wife, Sharon McGowan, brother of the renowned guitarist Caleb Quaye and the jazz musician Terri Quaye.

Born in Leith went Quaye in London, Manchester and Edinburgh to school. Nevertheless, he finished the school without any qualifications. Before he worked on music recordings, he worked for a time as a car painter.

Quaye was inspired early in his childhood by jazz musicians like Pete King, Ronnie Scott and Lionel Hampton. In addition, Duke Ellington Quayes was godfather. Quaye heard during his childhood in London a lot of jazz, encouraged by his mother, who him regularly to Ronnie Scott's legendary jazz club performances of American jazz musicians who toured Europe, took. His mother introduced him to Lionel Hampton before in Edinburgh. Duke Ellington had a decisive influence on Quayes life and his musical intuition. Quaye was on tour with his band in Amsterdam when he met his father for the first time.

Career

Quaye completed a solo recording contract with Polydor Records and moved to New York. He switched to Epic / Sony when Polydor let him out of the contract, and the end of 1997 he reached the UK Top 20 charts twice with "Sunday Shining" and "Even After All ". His reputation as a musician, he then cemented with "Maverick A Strike ", a bold but accessible album, which was released in September 1997. In less than three weeks after its release, it was certified gold and eventually led him to win the Brit Awards. "Maverick A Strike " has now been awarded a platinum. Two more albums were released on Epic, " Vanguard" (2000) and " Much More Than Much Love " (2004).

In collaboration with William Orbit with " Dice " In 2004 he managed another hit, whose notoriety can be attributed mainly to use in the final scene of the 14th episode of the first season of The OC. The piece is based on Beth Orton's " Roll the dice" in 1993.

Quaye lives and works in Berlin since 2005.
