Finnish parliamentary election, 1924

The parliamentary election in Finland in 1924 (Finnish Eduskuntavaalit 1924; Swedish Riksdagsvalet 1924) took place on 1 and 2 April 1924. It was the election of the 11th Parliament of Finland.

A new election was necessary after the 27 MPs of the Socialist Workers Party were arrested in August 1923 for alleged treason and President Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg decreed the dissolution of Parliament.

The Socialist Workers 'and small farmers' coalition went to the Socialist Workers Party in the election, but lost the new seats. Benefited primarily the Social Democrats, who won to 4.0 percentage points and, clearly remained the strongest force in front of the Land League, which lost only slightly.

The turnout was 57.4 %, which is 1.1 percentage points below the turnout at the last parliamentary election in 1922.

After the election

On May 31, 1924 Lauri Ingman of the Coalition Party Prime Minister. There was a coalition of the Land League, National Coalition Party, the Swedish People's Party and the Progress Party. First time in three years was thus a majority government ( 122 seats out of 200). However Ingmans coalition did not last long after the Land League was leaked because of a dispute over public sector pensions from the coalition. On March 31, 1925, Antti Tulenheimo ( also Coalition Party ) new Prime Minister. Tulenheimo formed a minority government of Coalition Party and Rural League, which so came to just 82 seats. December 31, 1925 to December 13, 1926, finally Kyösti Kallio from the Land League for the second time Prime Minister - the government made ​​further Coalition Party and Rural League. On 13 December 1926, the Social Democrats took over under its new Prime Minister Väinö Tanner the government. Less than a year from now, until December 17, 1927 ruled the 60 members of the SDP alone in a minority government.
