The parliamentary elections in Finland 1972 was held on 2 and 3 January 1972. It was the election of the 26th Parliament of Finland.

Finland experienced an economic boom phase in 1970. Nevertheless, it was in 1971 come to a general strike, as the collective bargaining had been broken off without result. This also led to a break in the grand coalition of the Centre Party and the Social Democrats under Prime Minister Ahti Karjalainen from the center. For the second time within two years Teuvo Aura now has been commissioned by the Liberal People's Party with the formation of a transitional government.

The election brought the major parties only minor changes. The Social Democratic Party was strongest faction (55 seats). The People's Democratic Union ( 37 seats ) replaced the conservative National Coalition Party (34 seats) again as the second strongest faction. The Agrarian Party, which was in 1970 occurred as a protest party and increased its share of the vote was strongly defend their 18 seats.

The turnout was 81.4 %, which is 0.8 percentage points below the turnout of 1970.

After the election

Due to intra-party clashes in the People's Democratic Union came a coalition between the Social Democrats and Socialist People's Democrats. Therefore Rafael Paasio formed a minority government SDP. In September 1972, Kalevi Sorsa formed (SDP ), a center-left government of SDP, center, the Swedish People's Party and the Liberal People's Party. 1975 resigned Sorsa and President Urho Kekkonen had new elections for September start. Business Leader took over the Social Keijo Liinamaa the government.
