First National Bank of Brewster

The building of the First National Bank of Brewster, later South East Town Hall is a built in Queen Anne style brick building on Main Street (U.S. Highway 6 ) beside the train station in Brewster, New York. It was built in 1886 and is currently used as an office building in the Town of Southeast, is one of the Brewster.

The bank itself was closed in 1964. The building was in 1988 entered in the National Register of Historic Places, because his style is completely intact and because of its importance in the history of the city.

Building

The rectangular one-story brick building stands on a granite base. The hipped roof is covered with slate and has an ornamental ridge cap. The main window consists of a front mullions and double - arched windows. The architecture takes into account the style element of the rounded windows of the then popular Richardsonian Romanesque also.

A small wing on the north façade is covered with hexagonal shingles and has a Palladian window in its gable end; a fireplace sitting on his roof. A similar part of the building is located on the opposite side to the south with a roof turret, which is provided with an oculus. The inclination of the land on which the building stands, allows a ground-level basement entrance on this side. A small extension on the west side is matched to the original building. The walls are designed as uncoated paneling and the ceilings are made of unpainted also performed in tongue and groove wood slats. The former banking hall has a vaulted ceiling and six-armed brass chandelier.

History

The First National Bank was founded in 1875, after Brewster and the surrounding area after the Civil War experienced significant growth. The bank became successful enough to be 1886 able to afford their own building. The bank was built next to the railway station.

While browsing through the bank, the building has not been substantially changed, with the exception of cultivation on the west side in the 1950s. When the bank closed in 1964. chose the city of South East, belongs to the Brewster, fast to move on the road in this building from the old administration building a little further down. The Town Supervisor and the Town Clerk had here until the construction of the present Town Hall at the New York State Route 22 north of the Village relocating The building department and several other departments are always settled here yet.
