Fjallabyggð is an Icelandic community in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 it had 2127 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located on the Tröllaskagi peninsula, west of the Eyjafjörður. The north of the village is dominated by the three fjords Siglufjörður, Héðinsfjörður and Ólafsfjörður.

On Siglufjörður is the same city. South of Héðinsfjörður The lake is Héðinsfjardarvatn, on Ólafsfjörður is the same city and the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn.

Southwest of Fjallabyggð is Sveitarfélagið Skagafjordur, southeast Dalvíkurbyggð.

History

The municipality was formed in June 2006 by the merger of the municipalities Siglufjörður ( Isl Siglufjarðarkaupstaður ) and Ólafsfjörður ( Isl Ólafsfjarðarbær ). The alternative name suggestions Hnjúkabyggð, Tröllaskagabyggð and Ægisbyggð could not enforce the electorate.

From 2006 to 2010, the tunnel was built between Héðinsfjarðargöng Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður.

Ólafsfjörður

Ólafsfjörður is a trading town on the fjord of the same name, a western tributary of the Eyjafjörður. On 1 January 2009 it had 850 inhabitants. Since 1991, the Ólafsfjarðargöng leads - a 3.4 km long tunnel - south to Eyjafjörður. The distance to Reykjavík is 414 road miles.

Siglufjörður

Siglufjörður (Eng. " Mast fjord ") is a commercial city. In the time of the herring boom Siglufjörður had about 3,000 inhabitants on 1 January 2009, there were 1277 inhabitants. From the heyday still bears witness to the herring fishing museum and a herring festival. Until the construction of the first long tunnel in Iceland - the Strákagöng - the place by land was difficult to achieve. The distance to Reykjavík is 401 road miles. With the formation of Fjallabyggð Siglufjörður moved from the region Norðurland vestra in the region Norðurland eystra.
