Flags of New York City

The flag of New York City is a tricolor of three vertical bars in blue, white and orange with the city's seal in blue in the middle bar. The tri-color design comes from the flag of the United Netherlands, which was used in 1626, when New Amsterdam was settled on the island of Manhattan.

The current design dates of 30 December 1977, when the seal was modified to use the year 1625 rather than 1664 ( when England took possession ). The Latin inscription Sigillum Novi Civitatis Eboraci ( " Seal of the City of New York " ) was also optional, which now has two variants are accepted.

The Office of the Mayor of New York City has its own official variant in which additionally an arc of five stars ( each represents one of the five boroughs ) is shown in blue above the seal.
