Flakstadøya

Flakstadøy is one of the outermost islands of the Lofotenarchipels and the Norwegian Fylke Nordland belonging municipality Flakstad. In the east separates the Sund Nappstraumen Flakstadøy of Vestvågøy and west of the Sundstraumen of Moskenesøy. The E 10 is guided by the 1776 m long Nappstaumtunnel built in 1990. Moskenesøy is achieved by the Sundstraumen spans, built in 2003, suspension bridge " Kråkern bru ".

Landscape

The Flagstadpollen cuts the island into three parts. The bizarre mountain range extends from north to south. On the northern side of the island has Skjelfjord the flat meadows with the Lofoten rather unusual stretch of sandy beaches. The south side is determined from a typical rocky - barren mountains at vestfjord, but where more sunny days can be found in the year by the foehn winds of the high mountains. The highest peaks in addition to the Stjerntinden hot Stortinden (866 m), Bjørntinden (802 m) and Stabben ( 777 m).

The midnight sun is here best to admire from May 27 to July 17 at the beaches to the north side. In addition to the main town Ramberg, there are more places: Nusfjord, Napp, Sound, Nesland Vikten and Flakstad.

General

Flakstad was formerly because of the Cross Church center of the island community. A previous building was first mentioned in 1413. The farmsteads scattered idyllically situated only four kilometers from the main town today Ramberg.

According to legend, in 1430 a Scottish stranded freighter with Russian timber on the north side of Lofoten. The wood floating in the nearby Fredvang on Moskenesøy ashore. It was there immediately started to build a church, which was only half finished, again swept away by a storm. The wood was again expelled and drove in the Flakstadhöfen to the beach. Now the parish seat was definitely determined by God's providence, and it completed the construction there. Close to the victims of World War II and especially the left on the lake from 1800 to 1930 fishermen and sailors was a monument. From these 130 years, there is little male graves in the church cemetery.
