Florian Stablewski

Florian Stablewski ( pl. Florian Oksza Stablewski ) ( born October 16, 1841 in Fraustadt, † November 24, 1906 in Poznań ) was a Catholic priest, a leading Polish politician in Prussia, the Archbishop of Poznań and Gniezno ( Gniezno ) and Primate of Poland.

Life and work

Stablewski studied theology in Poznan and Munich. In 1866 he received a doctorate in theology. and was ordained a priest in the same year. Between 1866 and 1873 he was vicar and teacher at the Gymnasium in Schrimm. Since 1873 he was provost in Wreschen and received the honorary title of Papal Chamberlain secret.

Of importance Stablewski was as important politician of the Polish population in Prussia. Between 1873 and 1892 he was a leading member of the Party of Poland ( Polski Kola ). For this he was also from 1877 to 1892 in the Prussian Chamber of Deputies, where he managed the constituency administrative district of Posen 7 ( Schrimm - Wreschen - Schroda ) represented.

The Prussian government under Leo von Caprivi suggested to the Pope Stablewski ago as archbishop of Poznań and Gniezno. The goal was to relax after anti-Polish policy in recent years under Otto von Bismarck. Between 1891 and 1906 practiced Stablewski from the Office of the Archbishop. During this time he tried to find a balance in the nationality question. He got after long negotiations that in the classrooms, the Polish language was to be taught again.
